A hands-on editing workshop for artists
Roznama - Medrar Center
Cairo, Egypt
This workshop invites you to bring fragments which seem the most relevant to you at the moment, or ones you are obsessing about. It could be one or many images, one or many sounds, and perhaps one or many fragments of a text or a citation. These elements you bring could at first seem disconnected, unrelated, even leading you into contradictory paths. During this session together, we will experience montage in its digital form (for those of you who can manipulate the editing software) and perhaps a more manual form (for those of you who can’t). The exercises might be a continuation of your ongoing projects, or generate new ideas inspired by the exercises and encounters which the workshop enables.

Composing with Fragments, an online workshop in collaboration with Rusted Radishes
a part of the Transgenerations Series curated by Rima Rantissi and Sara Mourad
We suggest that confronting our own state of fragmentation today might help us navigate a state of suspension or stuttering which the staggering sequence of events in the region have left us in. This workshop is designed for artists, writers and researchers, inviting participants to use fragments from their personal archives including photographs, videos, recorded sounds, and other materials, to compose short texts, videos, and audio pieces. The sessions includes creative exercises, presentations and discussions, and individual and group feedback – prioritizing process-work and works-in-progress.
The worshop resulted in the publication of short videos and texts on Rusted Radishes website.

How Do We Work Together? a workshop by The Camelia Committee
Suspended Ends Forum, Wekalet Behna

The Camelia Committee is Mira Adoumier, Carine Doumit and Nour Ouayda. We came together in March 2020 in Beirut to maintain the circulation of ideas, practices, and desires amongst our various projects. This workshop takes our recent works as a starting point to explore the interaction between our collective and individual practices. The sessions will include theoretical reflection and practical applications on the multiple ways in which fiction can be produced through filmmaking, writing and film programming.

Gabes Cinema Fen, Tunisia

In Defence of Digression: A seminar about second hand cinema practices, in collaboration with Nour Ouayda
Home workspace Program, Ashkal Alwan
Beirut, Lebanon
Our eyes drift towards the detail. We watch a film and what remains with us is a fragment rather than the whole: the gaze of a certain character, the extra in the background, the tree in the landscape, a line of dialogue. We found that other filmmakers and artists have developed their practice around these kinds of obsessions, isolating a detail, magnifying it, repeating it, therefore deconstructing the film, digressing from its storyline and thus revealing the potential of new narratives and forms that were hidden within the images and sounds. We discovered this was the basis of a whole cinematic gesture that some call second-hand cinema, others recycled or found footage cinema.
This seminar revolves around these practices, that of making films with already existing sounds and images. As a film editor / writer and a filmmaker / programmer working with hybrid forms of writing in cinema, we ask ourselves: Why does one work with already produced material instead of producing one’s own? How does the constraint of working with defined source materials generate multiple new forms? By placing editing at the heart of filmmaking, what is at stake? And what are the various gestures that allow the excavation of alternative narratives?
Moreover, what can second hand cinema practices reveal about our relationship with archives? How do they confront us with the question of their accessibility? What do they say about our status as isolated individuals in a world that has momentarily sealed its borders? In other words, what kind of circulation does the re-editing of already existing footage provoke?

Seminar: Writing gestures outside of literature
Raw Academy Session 1: Hunger Incorporated
Dakar, Senegal
Following a reading of excerpts from my book The
Spared Ones, I suggest interactive sessions around
the “childhood memory”.
Under what forms does the sensorial persists? How is it shaped into objects (lines,
images, words) while sustaining its ghostly figure,
simultaneously appearing and disappearing under
the gaze of our fleeting memory?
